A 250 mile cycle ride braving scorching weather against a ticking clock helped raise nearly £17,000 for South Yorkshire’s only children’s hospice.

After pedalling our way to Paris in a blistering heatwave, ITI Network Services presented a cheque for £16,959.12 to Bluebell Wood last week.

The cash will help Bluebell Wood support children and young adults across the region with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions, creating amazing memories for families to treasure forever.

ITI’s 11-strong team rode the 250 miles from London to Paris at the end of the hottest July in recent memory.

Cyclists Ian Bell, Wayne Brown, Jason Denmark, Ross Denmark, Andrew Eyre, Craig Gray, Alex Goodlad, Keith Richardson, Hugh Spear, Chris Weston and Dave Wing, managed to beat the clock and arrived in Paris on 29 July just before the Tour de France.

The mammoth sponsored cycle was the latest of several fundraisers ITI Network Services has undertaken for the charity, including a ‘Director Wax-a-thon’.

Jason Denmark, Managing Director of ITI Network Services, said:

“We’re enormously grateful to everyone who supported and sponsored the team in aid of such a worthwhile cause. Bluebell Wood does incredible work for families and the ride was a great challenge. Our team included cyclists of all levels: active and complete novices.

“As we set off in a London heatwave, we were all totally naïve to the perils that lay ahead,  unsure if we’d have the staying power to make it to Paris before the Tour arrived. But the team pulled out the stops, constantly thinking of our sponsors’ support and crossed the line in good time. Well done to all for lasting the pace, but even more so, huge congratulations to them all for raising so much for such a great cause.”

Helen Mower, Head of Fundraising at Bluebell Wood said:

“This is an amazing achievement and we’re so grateful to the team who cycled this distance during some of the hottest days of the year. Massive thanks also go to everyone who sponsored them.

“At the time the team were cycling to Paris, we were providing fun experiences here for our children and families. This included our Beach day when children who won’t be able to get to the seaside this year, because of their complex medical needs, were able to enjoy their very own day at the beach here in North Anston. With sand, water, ice creams, music, games and much more it was a really fun family day out, creating lovely memories.

“Without the support of people like the amazing team who cycled from London to Paris we just wouldn’t be able to create these memories.  Thanks to them all for their amazing support in taking on this huge challenge.”
